Introduced in 1951, this Royal Doulton Character Toby mug designed by Max Henk, depicts the fictional buccaneer character “Long John Silver” from Robert Louis Stevenson’s ever so popular “Treasure Island”. The facial expressions on this piece are superb and realistic. The handle is shaped into his parrot companion, Captain Flint, who is finely painted in blue-gray with green highlights.This Toby Mug belonged to my grandmother. I had/have no idea of the significance of this item. It was never used, only displayed. The colours are as bright as originally made. The bottom logo is the original, older style including all the license numbers. Numbered 112/51. I always thought of this as a mug but looking and the pirate hat, it could also work as a creamer for the table. The detail is amazing 4 inches high and 4.5 inches across. Questions welcomed.
