“Wakumba Man” painting by artist Arthur August Jansson (b. Aug 1890 d. March 1960). Oil on board painting of a Kamba or Akamba tribesman from Kenya. A striking painting that features the tribesman in traditional garb holding his bow. Noted on the back of the painting by the artist “Painted by Arthur A. Jansson 1928, Wakamba Man, Kenya Colony, B.E. Africa”. Arthur Jansson was included as the second artist to accompany Carl Akeley on his famous and final 1926 expedition to Africa. It was suggested by William Robinson Leigh that Jansson, who studied with Leigh, be hired as the second artist. It was during this expedition that this was portrait was sketched and then subsequently painted.
